The "Night of Music" 2009

On December 21, for the second consecutive year, the European Music Day wore it night costume and upon the rise of the winter solstice, it presented the "Night of Music" in collaboration with the new Jazz team of Bacaro Club.

The aim of this year's evening was to marry a festive evening combining dancing and Dj set, Live Jazz and solo piano recital. Friends and friends of friends started to gather early in the evening under the melodies of Dj Dimitri from DancetoDance Barcelona (now resident at Bacaro). Then, while the Club was beginning to fill with festive crowd, the distinguished doublebass player Petros Klampanis came on stage with his friends Takis Paterelis, Spiros Manesi and Sotiris Ntouvas. They quickly warmed up the atmosphere with standard Jazz and improvisations, and soon, the first part of the evening ended in applause and cheers.

Then, the surprise of the evening followed. A young man from New Zealand went on stage and discreetly sat at the piano without gathering the attention of the crowd. The first notes were heard with difficulty through the noise of the audience, but the eyes turned toward him and talks slowly decreased. Attendees gathered around the piano, others sat on the ground, others whistled in excitement! Aron Ottignon offered us (literally) a unique recital with a new sound of Jazz that opened our hearts and our ears.

Then the night went on upon the inspirations of DJ Dimitri and the improvisations of Petros, Aron, Takis, Spyros and Sotiris!

The experiment was successful since the crowd stood up with great euphoria until the early morning! Another "Night of Music" is over, leaving the best impressions for the year gone and announcing the best for the year to come.

We want to thank the team of Bacaro for the excellent hospitality and collaboration, the artists that gave their best, the Cultural Organization of the City of Athens and the French Institute for their support and the fantastic audience that honoured us with their presence.

We wish everyone Health, Happiness, Creativity and Strength for the New Year.

European Music day 2009 - 2010
European Music Day has returned… enhanced and ready for more cultural challenges.

Dusty offices, sand in the pockets, anxiety inevitable, as well as the appetite for new things. Spread optimism, the grin one way road. Already 10 Years and we wish many more to come.
Back to all the things we have accomplished together. Musicians, auditors, key person, obvious and modest heroes and factor of this amazing journey!

Starting mid October rhythms of creation and preparation will come back to normal again.  We think about establishing European… night… of Music, as we did with the Day! We want to be active and produce positive creativity. We do not have anything to hide and on the contrary, the new technological means of communication allow us to communicate better.  We wish you to make the same, share your ideas with us, spread your suggestions or any other proposal that can help or improve our everyday routine via the culture. From cultural interference or events up to seminars of breathing (!)… Further to our primary aim to open our ears, we wish to open also our minds… therefore, let’s stay connected!

Review 2009

Keep your ears wide open!

European Music Day turned 10 with a blast! Featuring more than 134 events in 24 cities all over Greece music and musicians took control.
Despite all difficulties and a tight budget European Music Day festivities not only took place but also took us by surprise with their boom. The recent growth of the EMD national network has been such that it is now imperative yearly state funding is assured in order for the network to evolve even further.
In 2009 new arrivals, like Larisa, made an impression while old friends such as Volos accomplished their most successful EMD events to date. Weather conditions were not always on our side but overall it has to be acknowledged that the national network utilized its potential to the fullest this year.

In Athens hundreds of artists gave their best performances winning over heterogeneous audiences. In Thisseio the Philharmonic Orchestra of the city of Athens created a unique atmosphere. Assomaton Street was flooded with people for three consecutive nights. In Technopolis thousands of people gathered to enjoy Shantel’s performance. It was unfortunate though that his insolent behavior almost caused cancellation of the second day of concerts in Technopolis. Music was still there though and the incredible Aronas project or the rising Intravenus band gave a fantastic live on 23.

This year’s Athenian EMD ended in the best possible way. Birdy Nam Nam returned to celebrate our 10th anniversary turning their live set into one of the best open-air parties this city has ever seen.

European Music Day would like to thank all those that supported it’s cause one way or the other and promise that it will come back fresh and even better in 2010!

More details in the Review 2009 (to come mid-October)

1st Press Release - European Music Day 2009

European Music Day celebrates it's 10th anniversary in Greece

Long before reclaiming public space became a hot topic in the social agenda there was a Festival that set up its stages on the streets – or to be more exact used streets themselves as stages. Long before economic recession a Festival chose to defy the laws of the market remaining free for everyone.

Back in the day when European Music Day made its first appearance in Greece no one could guess that 10 years later it would constitute the biggest music event in the country. Today for artists as well as the public the 21st of June IS Music Day. A day in which the growl of car engines at Syntagma Square can be covered by the sounds of the city;s Philharmonic Orchestra, when traffic can be interrupted by a red double decker bus with live music on top of it, when the best parties do not take place at bars and clubs but the biggest squares and parks in the country.

For three days each year European Music Day gives us a unique chance to experience our cities in new, exciting ways. And that is it's main reason for celebration!

European Music Day 2009

On the occasion of its birthday EMD started early this year. Already more that 110 artistic and educative events have taken place all over the country under its auspices.

At the same time 355 bands answered EMD's call for artistic proposals. Bare in mind that this year EMD travels to more than 23 cities all over Greece. More than 70 bands will travel to and from cities of the national network, that is rightly considered one of the most dynamic of Europe.

Our Greek “ambassadors” abroad this year include MaraveyasIllegaland Lefteris Christofis who will be traveling to EMD Berlin and Lausanne.

As for our foreign guests? They represent a great musical variety: danish pop, french electro – punk, german jazz, polish ambient…Have a look
